“… the barbell is almost a miracle machine…
but it still leaves a great deal to be desired.”
– Arthur Jones

The Multi Angle Resistance System

Arthur Jones, Inventor of Nautilus Equipment stated this because he recognized that when exercising with a barbell there exists “a point during the exercise movement where the resistance feels heavier than it does at other points”1. Jones referred to this as “the sticking point”.

MARS

The question now becomes: Is the sticking point really what makes the barbell imperfect? The sticking point shouldn’t be considered an imperfection. It could be looked at as an opportunity in that this point requires an increase in effort… muscular effort. Now imagine if you could choose where this sticking point occurs… This would allow you to choose (in part) where an increase in muscular effort would occur during the movement of the barbell and therefore would change the muscle fiber recruitment pattern. This would allow more training options in that the same barbell movement could be adjusted as to where the peak effort occurs and this would be achieved even though no additional weight is added.

A system that enables adjustability to where peak muscular effort occurs during the performance of a barbell exercise without adding additional weight brings the barbell one step closer to being a “miracle machine”. MARS is that system!
